This was a rare wedding where I had not met the couple before the wedding day. Normally we do an engagement session or at the very least have a beer (or they have a beer and I stare longingly at it) but that didn’t happen for this wedding. Because of this I was extra nervous. On top of the usual concern, paranoia, and rituals of gear preparation I observe before a wedding I was thinking in the back of my head how I really hoped Bakari and Ajana would like us.
Of course I had absolutely nothing to worry about. The minute I saw Ajana she welcomed me into a hug as if we’d know each other forever. And she put her trust in me through that hug. I took out my camera and immersed myself in the story.
A story that began in a Denver hotel room but of course began years ago. A story of a couple surrounded and supported by the family and friends who love them. Of a couple who have found through each other their best selves to give to all those around them. Of a wedding in a gorgeous garden with forgotten programs that still went on (because programs are not an essential element in committing to a marriage). Of a broom that symbolized the determination and beauty of their ancestors. A story that was the first day of a marriage.
Congratulations, Ajana and Bakari!
